My favorite boychoir is Libera, but I also love the Vienna Boys Choir. Moreover, I have long wanted to visit Australia. So I had a natural interest in reading this book.I have to tell you that Phoenix does what good authors do: he doesn't take the story where the reader expected. I thought I had it figured out near the beginning, but I didn't. It made reading interesting and fun.
I like this book, and recommend it for your purchase as well.

A wartime tale that touches the heart.
Orphans who are a part of the Vienna Boys Choir, are taken to Australia to protect their lives since their country had been invaded by the Germans.
One orphan in particular, Kurt, becomes very fond of a former choir singer, Troy, and has hopes he will adopt him. Problems arise as Troy discovers that his wife and son, thought dead, are still alive.
The plot has many twists that keep the reader interested. Although at times it was a little long in certain parts, it is nonetheless a good read. The ending was a pleasant surprise.
I have mixed feelings about this one. The plot was good, the idea was different, and there was plenty of action to keep the story going. I liked both the idea of WWII in Australia and the Vienna Boys' Choir as refugees. I would be interested to know if any of this is based on fact. However good the basic story, though, there were MAJOR issues. I don't think the author ever met, let alone used, an adjective. The whole story was "told," not "shown." A thorough editing could have caught errors like 'endings' instead of 'innings' in the baseball game and the Germans referring to a single child as the 'kinder,' which is the plural and should be capitalized. Some of the plot was contrived, like everyone falling for the kid because he had a good voice, and I couldn't figure out what the point of the foster father and his science was. Other parts were obvious from the first, but didn't really detract.
This felt a lot like reading an initial draft, where the author is desperately scribbling the action and basic dialogue so he won't forget it, with the intention of returning later to fill in the descriptions, smooth out the relationships and the dialogue and tighten up the plot. Only this author never got around to the work of polishing, or even basic editing. It's a pity; this could have been quite a good book had the author put in the effort to make it so.
