I'd never heard of frederic before and was surprised at the (to me) modernity of the prose. The story itself is interesting enough to keep one reading, but I never grew to like the protagonist. Even at the end, he was entertaining grandiose opinions of his own worth and capabilities, which mindset caused his downfall to begin with. Anyone's disillusion with, and separation from religion can be painful, but Theron Wares was especially so.Product details

The Damnation of Theron Ware Harold Frederic 9781470056636 Books Reviews
The book was excellent, but I would not order a publication in this size and format again (basically, 8 1/2 x 11). It was an awkward size to hold.
I did t much care for this character. It perhaps for that reason I kept reading hoping he would redeem himself.
Beautiful imagery throughout. I had to keep reminding myself how long ago the book was written.
a story of a man stuck in the temporal, a place where pleasing the other clay pots is key. that skepticism was rife back then and that many a catholic and protestant pulpit was and is today occupied by hirlings should come as no surprise. the story is a cautionary tale indeed. but for the Lord's grace go i...
Definitely an American Classic. A great view of Midwest as it became "modern." Portraits of Irish Catholics, Town Atheists, and Methodists with a demure sexual intrigue. Missing the passion of Dreiser and the sarcasm of Lewis or Mencken. Should be read especially since it has been suppressed.
A forgotten classic of American literature. Well drawn characters and relentless porttail of Pastor Ware's downward spiral. A little unbelievable that the Catholic Church is seen as the beacon of enlightenment and the "Hollywood " ending is likewise a stretch but otherwise an entertaining treatment of this time in our history.
It is a bad thing to be caught in a situation not knowing your own identity. Sometimes in discovery of your identity one falls in the place of hardship and disillusionment. This book offers a twist of revelation, which one finally discovers there is hope at the end of the tunnel. However, what you thought was your reality, becomes a whole new dimension in the forward movement of your journey.
